Approach

Psychodynamic and relational therapy

Healing takes place in the context of relationships. Lasting change emerges through understanding the deeper patterns that shape thoughts, feelings, self-worth, and connection with others.

01Approach

Why psychodynamic, why relational

Psychodynamic therapy starts from a simple observation: much of what shapes our lives runs beneath the surface. The moods that arrive uninvited, the relationships that repeat themselves, the standards we cannot seem to meet or put down. These patterns have origins. They also have their logic.

The relational part matters just as much. We are formed in relationships, we are hurt in relationships, and we heal in relationships. The relationship between us becomes a place where old patterns can be noticed safely and new ones can be practiced.

02Approach

A collaborative and engaging process

Therapy with me is not a silent room. I am an active, engaged presence: I ask questions, offer observations, and think out loud with you. We work as collaborators, with your sense of what matters guiding where we go.

At the same time, I protect the qualities that make therapy different from any other conversation: unhurried attention, confidentiality, and an absence of judgment.

03Approach

Deeper patterns, self-worth, and change

Symptoms are often the visible edge of something larger. Anxiety may carry an old vigilance; perfectionism may protect the feeling that we are never quite enough; difficulty in relationships may echo what connection once cost. As those deeper patterns come into view, they tend to loosen.

04Approach

What you can expect

We usually meet weekly, at a consistent time, in person in Arlington or virtually anywhere in Virginia. Early sessions are for getting oriented: what brings you now, what has helped or not helped before, and what you want from this work.

From there, sessions follow what is alive for you. Some weeks that is the immediate situation; other weeks it is the history underneath it. Both belong in the room.
